The Inside Scoop: Getting the Most Out of Yelp for Your Business

yelp-canada-logo[an interview with Yelp Canada’s Community Manager, Crystal Henrickson]

Perhaps before 2004, to be “Yelped” was nothing to be happy about. But ever since the review company was launched, many small and medium sized businesses have received a boost because of the social networking/review site Yelp. Founded by former PayPal employees Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons, Yelp encourages users to rate and write reviews about anything and everything under the sun (though mostly they stick with local businesses like restaurants, salons, florists, etc.)

Businesses are also encouraged to maintain their own page, where they can upload photos and information, and even respond to member’s comments. Though they initially began with San Francisco, they quickly expanded into 40 other cities (including cities in Canada and the UK), and they have over 26 million page views per month.

We had a chance to chat with Crystal Henrickson at Yelp’s local Vancouver office. We wanted to get the real scoop on how any business can take advantage of Yelp’s features and give your business that “Yelp” edge.

How to Create an Online Contest for Your Business

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

Online Contest Agency
If business is feeling a little flat, then an online contest may be just what you need to bring customers crashing through the door. Online promotions these days, however, are nothing like their offline counterparts. It used to be that in order to reach a lot of people, businesses had to use mass media (TV, print and radio) to get the word out. With the Internet though, the playing field has become even, and anyone with a message can get their word out.

So why create an online promotion?
Contests and promotions have always been a cost-effective way to create excitement and drum up business for companies – and the internet age hasn’t changed that; it’s only made it easier. The good news? Anyone with a computer and an internet connection can create a contest. The bad news? Anyone with a computer and an internet connection can create a contest. Just check your spam mailbox and look through the dozens of sweepstakes and promos you get (tucked in between those funny-sounding emails from Nigeria and the ad for “enhancement” pills.) With the influx of all this information, how can you make your online contest stand out?

Know your objective.
Different contests have different objectives. Some may want to bring in new customers; others may seek to increase sales of a new product. It doesn’t make sense to create a contest asking participants to send in their best mac and cheese recipe when all you really want is to collect email and home addresses to create a marketing database. Knowing what you want to achieve will help you focus and allow you to allocate your resources properly.

Know the rules and the logistics.
Check with your local, provincial or national regulations regarding such contests. Games of chance are often governed by a set of rules and these rules will determine the mechanics of any contest. Make sure it is within the limits of the law.

After determining the objective and knowing the confines you’ll be working in, you’ll have to determine the logistics. How will people join? How do you get the message out to them and how will you choose a winner.

Engage your audience with content.
If you notice, we haven’t mentioned anything about prizes yet. Sure, a brand new car or a trip to the Bahamas will definitely catch people’s attention, but it is how you interact with participants that will keep them coming back to you. It’s all about immersing them in the brand experience – having them remember YOU, the company, long after the promotion has passed. This is the part where the best of the best stand out – any company can create a promotional contest, but it takes a great company to create a contest that sticks in people’s minds.

If you think an online contest is right for you, then you can get started right away by contacting us. We’ll come up with a solution that meets your objectives and come up with the right content that resonates with your audience.

Viral Marketing Videos That’ll Give You Goosebumps

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

Today, with the rapid adoption of social media, a successful viral marketing campaign is a coveted triumph for marketers. What makes viral marketing so valuable is its very nature, the fact that it spreads unchecked, uncontrolled and without constraint like a virus. There is no other form of advertising that has the unbounded potential of viral marketing.

Why? Because it is driven by the consumer and not the seller. Of course, the aim of a viral marketing campaign is to get a company in the spotlight and receive massive exposure online but in order for it to be successful, it has to have viral appeal. People need to be moved by it, feel excited by what they see to the extent that they want to share it.

We’re going to share with you some recent viral marketing videos that have done exactly that, companies communicated something unique and their target market ensured that the intended audience saw and shared. Viral marketing at its best makes you want to join in.

  1. T-Mobile: Life’s For Sharing
On 19 January 2009, at 11:00am at Liverpool Street Station, T-Mobile launched its Life’s For Sharing campaign, live. From the depths of a teeming train station, casually dressed dancers, seemingly also a part of the stations’ daily grind, suddenly began to dance. As the music continued and the dancers performed their routine to different music clips, the station started to come alive until at the very end almost everyone on the platform was doing ‘the twist’. Then, as suddenly as it began, the music stopped and the crowd dispersed. What a brilliant captive audience, no doubt, every single passenger in that station called more than one friend with the line; ‘You’ll never believe what happened to me today!’ On YouTube, the clip has been viewed over 13,6 million times and counting.
  2. Extreme Sheep LED Art

Samsung created this fantastically smart campaign which combines nature and technology to promote the LED technology and of course, the company’s LED TVs. Samsung are using a very appealing video to promote a rather sophisticated product. This video is just short of 9 million views on YouTube.

  3. The Portobello Mushroom Burger

The beauty of viral videos is that they do not have to be nearly as sophisticated as the two mentioned above. This simple video which incorporates the eloquent talents of a young gentleman serves very effectively to spread the Carl’s message – How to Eat a Six Dollar Portobello Mushroom Burger.
