The Importance of Calls to Action

Posted on by Michelle Garrigo

Your pay-per-click campaign and search engine optimization efforts have paid off; you’re finally getting lots of visitors to your website! Maybe your website design looks fantastic, but no one seems to be buying. What’s up with that?

Our question to you is…have you told them what to do? No seriously, have you? After your visitors have finished reading your “About” and “Product/Services” pages, what are they supposed to do? You have to tell them! This is where the importance of calls to action comes in.

A call to action gives clear instructions to visitors about what they need to do next. It should be simple and visible on every single page of your website. So, what is your call to action? Every website has different objectives because every business has specific goals they want to achieve through their website. It may be getting visitors to make a purchase online, sign up for an email newsletter subscription or book an online reservation.

However, not all calls to action need to lead to a sale. It may just as easily be having a visitor request more information. Check-out our October 17 Media calls to action:

As well, there is no rule that your call to action needs to be at the very bottom of your pages. You may want to have a call to action on the high right side of your page. This has become a trend in recent years and website visitors may be familiar with this placement. Here are some other tips you can follow:

  • Use active language such as “learn”, “place”, “add”, “submit” and “get”.
  • Encourage users to complete a call to action with an incentive. For example, offer a free trial.
  • Remove any risk that may be associated with visitors completing your call to action. Clearly state your privacy or return policy.

Thinking about reviewing your site to see if you’ve got your calls to action in the best places? We’ve got your answers! Feel free to give us a call or send us an email!

Get Connected With QR Codes

Starbucks SRCH QR Code

A QR code (short for Quick Response) is a specific matrix barcode or a two-dimensional code that can hold thousands of alphanumeric characters of information. Often it features a URL that directs users to a site where they can learn more about the object or place. Dedicated QR barcode readers and mobile devices equipped with cameras can interpret these codes.

Popular in Japan and some European countries, QR codes are not new. This technology has been around since 1994, but it is becoming an increasing trend in North America. These codes can be found just about anywhere, such as on: product labels, billboards, buildings, newspapers, magazines, clothing and more.

Yesterday, Starbucks launched its “SRCH by Starbucks featuring Lady Gaga” campaign and they are definitely capitalizing on QR codes. Creating a QR code scavenger hunt for Lady Gaga-related prizes, fans can scan the codes on Starbucks banners and other material to receive digital clues and follow the hunt!

For Starbucks, the QR code initiative is to build stronger relationships with their most engaged customers. SRCH was also implemented to generate awareness and sales on the brand’s Frappuccino for the summer.

The future of QR codes is limitless! You can seamlessly incorporate it into your social media! Have you spotted Starbucks QR codes? Do you want a QR code to link to your website? Don’t forget to have a mobile friendly page.  If you need help with executing your QR codes, we are here to help!

Taste the Social Media Rainbow from Skittles

Posted on by Katie Turvill

Since we loved writing about Red Bull so much, we decided to do another company profile and this time we chose Skittles! Their social media presence is just as popular and they continue to see success, but they have taken a different approach in managing their accounts. While Red Bull maintained an interactive and entertaining site, Skittles uses the simplicity of Status Updates, Photos and Tweets as their form of entertainment.

Everyone knows the slogan “Taste the Rainbow” and most people have seen the unique personality of Skittles through their commercials like Skittles Leak and Skittles Midas Touch but until you visit their Facebook Page or Twitter handle, you will never truly see the madness behind Skittles. I don’t know who is sitting there thinking of these tweets and status updates but they are either a genius or partially insane. Reading through the endless number of unique posts I found myself laughing and confused at the same time. It may seem crazy, but it’s working for them since they usually see roughly 500-2,000 comments and 2,000-12,000 “likes” on their status posts! Who knew that 10-20 simple words could generate such a response?!

Skittles also does an amazing job with running contests and photo challenges to get their fans involved. Their contests usually involve a creative use of Skittles in a photo that is to be uploaded onto their Facebook Page. The most recent prize given away for a contest was a fully stocked Skittles vending machine. You would think that most people would not desire this prize, but you’d be surprised at how many entries they received.

Skittles have also recently started a campaign called “Rainbro of the Week.” Skittles proposes a photo challenge to its fans and then fans are required to post a photo in guideline with that challenge. Of course, since it is Skittles, the challenges are going to be a little out of the ordinary. The chosen “Rainbro” gets the honour of having their picture posted within the profile picture of the Skittles page. These contests encourage fan interaction and stick with Skittles’ unique brand image. It is a great way to keep fans coming back to check what the newest challenge is and who will be the “Rainbro.”

Rainbow Inventions is another unique aspect of Skittles’ social media adventures. Although the actual inventions are posted to a blog website, they are primarily promoted on the Facebook Page through posts. These inventions are not items that you would normally expect to see, but from what we have seen from Skittles so far, they are very suitable. Items range from a Boom Box Chainsaw to a Brief Case Slot Machine. And of course once again, Skittles receives a positive response from their fans who continue to be entertained by their unique personality.

What I want to commend Skittles on the most is their ability to determine a unique brand image and personality and stay consistent with it through all channels of media. This is an essential factor when marketing, especially when using a large number of advertising outlets. Consumers have grown to love the craziness behind the Skittles team and will continue to be loyal fans fighting over who will be the next “Rainbro of the week.” Way to go Skittles, whatever you are feeding your employees over there must be working!

Manage Your Business’s Social Life

Online networking has reached another height with the introduction of Hootsuite and Netvibes. Called “social media dashboards” these allow people to manage their internet life all in one place, without having to switch tabs and applications.

NetvibesHootsuiteNetvibes is a free website created in 2005 empowering web users to experience a personalized online and internet life. They allow users to be able to monitor, personalize, and publish all in one dashboard.

With Netvibes you can customize your own page with everything you need for your digital life in one place. You can input photos, videos, pdf files, and more. You can keep up with your favorite social networking sites (such as Facebook and Twitter) and find out what’s new around the Net.

Keep it personalized with their private profile or share a public profile across the web where you can share anything in your dashboard to friends and many more.

Another similar application is provided by a local Vancouver, BC company: Hootsuite. It functions much like Netvibes, but with some varying features. Created by Invoke media, Hootsuite was targeted to a wide user market, but marketing groups, business companies, and social groups found it a useful tool to launch their campaigns and keep track of their statuses online.

Hootsuite has a wide range of features, including the Klout tool where you can gauge your social influence and reputation throughout the web. Higher Klout scores mean more influence. Keep track and review visualization link statistics results in real-time with its click-through statistics and easy report exporting feature. Collaborating with a team, picking new members and removing some could be easily done. You can manage several account members and contributors, share data access without knowing each others passwords, and assign and follow up on each team members from a single centralized dashboard.

With the many social networking sites that you can work with on one page (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress, and more), you can update, post, and broadcast to multiple accounts all at the same time. Create searches for your company or brand name and gather intelligence by monitoring mentions of your brand, search terms, and company.

This advancement in social media use has great advantages to many internet users across the globe. It makes your life easier and keeps you organized. With the use of only one main page which has all essential tools and sites in it, you can do away with multiple applications and tabs open at the same time.
