What’s your degree in?
Currently I am Degree-less but I do have a fantastic Marketing Communications Diploma from BCIT.

Favourite marketing campaign?
I love Return-it’s ‘Don’t mess with karma’ campaign. It’s hilarious and it’s for a good cause. I also enjoy watching stickmen get hurt, apparently.

Favourite marketing-related website?
Anytime I’m looking for some marketing-related entertainment, Adfreak is where I go. It brings together advertising news, media and pop culture in well written and entertaining articles. I can pretty much guarantee you’ll find something good every time you visit.

Introducing Katie Turvill!!

Katie TurvillOctober 17 Media welcomes our newest team member, Katie Turvill! Katie recently graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University’s School of Business and Economics, and she’ll be working with us as a Marketing and Administrative Assistant. Check out our interview with her below to learn a bit more about this recent grad. Welcome to the team, Katie!

What’s your degree in?
I have an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Marketing and Brand Management from Wilfrid Laurier University. GO HAWKS!

Favourite marketing campaign?
That would have to be the Molson Canadian “Made in Canada,” “Canadian View Point” and “The Code” ads. It definitely appeals to the patriotic side of Canadians which has become more prevalent since the Olympics. They stay away from the typical beer commercials, which is nice and appeal to a different side of Canadians.

Favourite marketing-related website?
It’s got to be Facebook. It’s amazing how rapidly the website grew in such a short period of time. I love how you can find and connect with people that you have lost touch with over the years. And now the business aspect that has been added to allow companies to develop their own page has brought Facebook to a whole new level.

What’s your dream client and project?
I don’t have a specific dream client or project but anything related to a sports team or event would be ideal for me. Growing up with two older brothers has turned me into a sports fanatic and having the opportunity to work with any sports team would be an experience that I would never turn down.

Best attribute?
Very genuine!

Favourite chocolate bar?
I try (key word “try”) to avoid chocolate but the one that always gets me is Green & Black’s organic chocolate.

Pet peeve?
Slow walkers that take up the entire sidewalk and are oblivious to the people around them.

Strange fact about you?
I can sometimes be found eating a meal or snack while sitting on the kitchen floor.

Introducing Nikki Wong!

Nikki WongOctober 17 Media welcomes our newest team member, Nikki Wong! Nikki recently graduated from BCIT’s Marketing Communications program, and she’ll be working with us as a Marketing and Administrative Assistant. Check out our interview with her below to learn a bit more about this recent grad. Welcome to the team, Nikki!

What’s your degree in?
No degree (yet!), but I have my Diploma of Technology from British Columbia Institute of Technology’s (BCIT) Marketing Management program, with a concentration in Marketing Communications. I do plan on eventually getting my Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) though.

Favourite marketing campaign?

My favourite campaign has got to be Coca-Cola’s Happiness Factory campaign. The commercials showed this magical world inside a Coke vending machine, and all the work that went into getting a bottle of Coke dispensed. It was so whimsical and fun; exactly the way a non-essential product should be marketed (although some might argue the necessity of Coke)!

Favourite marketing-related website?
My marketing-related site du jour is Twitter. Having originally joined with skepticism, I now check my Twitter compulsively. The community I’ve discovered through Twitter is unlike anything else.

What’s your dream client and project?
I’d have to say I don’t have a dream client per se, but it’s a huge dream of mine to take a diminishing brand and revive it into a relevant and cool brand, a la Old Spice.

Best attribute?
My inclination to be welcoming and inclusive of everyone.

Favourite chocolate bar?
I don’t eat chocolate bars much, but my favourite is Coffee Crisp. My all-time favourite chocolate, though, is Ferraro Rocher. I could eat those until I was sick to my stomach, and then some!

Pet peeve?
I can’t stand being stuck behind someone who’s walking slowly.

Strange fact about you?
I was born with really crooked pinky fingers. They look like they were broken.

Introducing Eva Shiu!

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

October 17 Media welcomes our newest team member, Eva Shiu! Eva is a UBC Marketing graduate, and she’ll be working with us as a Marketing and Administrative Assistant. Check out our interview with her below to learn a bit more about this recent grad. Welcome to the team, Eva!

What’s your degree in?
Marketing of course! I recently graduated from the Sauder School of Business at UBC but would love to eventually do a Master’s somewhere in Europe in public relations or fashion communication or something of the like. I’ll take any excuse to travel and live in Europe for awhile.

Favourite marketing campaign?
It’s a tad old now, but the one that pops in my mind is the “Bom Chicka Wah Wah” Axe commercials from about three years ago. There were a few of them but the ones I remember most vividly were the classroom and grocery store scenarios. The grocery store one was my favourite! A lady was pushing her grandmother in a wheelchair in the grocery store and when she walks by the stock boy stocking vegetables, she shoves her grandmother’s wheelchair away and bursts out into a “Bom Chicka Wah Wah” act. Priceless.

Favourite marketing-related website?
My newest obsession is Twitter. I find it so fascinating how it can connect you to people you don’t know but want to know (it channels my inner love for celebrities). Recently I was in New York with a friend and we were outside a fashion show hoping to catch some models or celebrities come out from the event. As we were waiting outside, we could see images of the runway and the show inside just from tweets!

What’s your dream client and project?
I would love to work for a fashion design house working on marketing, PR, or events. My dream designer to work with would be Marc Jacobs because he’s a genius. I would also be extremely satisfied working with any company that would allow me to work in NYC, Montreal, London or Paris, and perhaps still live in Vancouver (that actually does sound a bit greedy now).

Best attribute?
I try to live everyday to the fullest and with no regrets!

Favourite chocolate bar?
ALL KINDS. I’m such a chocaholic, but if I had to choose, I would probably have to say… Cookies’n’Cream… no, Twix… no, I can’t choose. :|

Pet peeve?
Daily pet peeves: people with poor transit etiquette (i.e., not moving to the back of the bus) and people who walk slowly. I will cut you off like a Ferrari if you are walking slow.

Strange fact about you?
I have a strange phobia that probably does not exist – I have a fear of pores. Anything that looks pore-ish, like a sponge.

Introducing the Fabulous Flora Leung!

Flora LeungOctober 17 Media welcomes our newest team member, Flora Leung! Flora is a marketing and communication co-op student from Simon Fraser University, and she’ll be working with us for the next four months as our Marketing and Administrative Assistant. Check out our interview with her below to learn a bit more about this go-getter. Welcome to the team, Flora!

What’s your degree in?
I’m working toward a joint major in Business and Communication at SFU with a concentration in marketing and media and culture. It gives an interesting mix of perspectives on advertising, public relations, and popular culture, and I love it!

Favourite marketing campaign?
It’s hard to choose a favourite with the amount of inspiring, creative work out there! But I’m a huge fan of guerilla and viral marketing, and I thought the recent campaign on Chatroulette for the horror movie “The Last Exorcism” was very clever. I was too chicken to watch it at first, but I’m glad I forced myself to sit through it. It’s actually not that bad, but I’d better warn you that it’s not for the faint-hearted! (more…)
