What do you need to know about Facebook Timeline for Brands?

Posted on by Nikki Wong

You may have heard about the changes Facebook announced mid last week for Business Pages: Facebook Timeline will be coming to business pages starting March 30, 2012, and is certainly one of the more drastic user interface changes Facebook will have implemented recently.

We’ve been learning all we can about Timeline for Brands, so we can guide you through the changes. Below are some of the highlights:

Cover Image

While existing custom tabs will still look and function as before, they will no longer be designated as “default landing tabs” and will instead show up within that panel of clickable images along the top of the Timeline. Now, all users will be sent directly to the Facebook Timeline, on which the largest branding opportunity is the Cover image:

Important to note, cover images cannot contain the following:

- Price/purchase info
- Contact info
- Calls to action
- References to FB features such as Like or Share (Yup, this means no more arrows pointing to the Like button!)

As the user’s first contact point with the brand, this cover image presents us with some unique challenges and opportunities around branding and promotion. While the custom tabs still play an important role, the emphasis is less about being that first welcoming contact point (since you can no longer set a tab as a default landing page) and more about engagement.

Some Other Cool New Features

1. User access to metrics – If a user clicks “Like”, they have access to a basic Facebook Insights dashboard: brand stats (e.g. likes, dates of highest click through rates, etc.) become visible to fans and general users alike — this is an excellent opportunity for competitive analysis of other brands’ efforts and content.

2. Option to screen and moderate all users’ comments – Rather than allowing fans free reign to comment on your page, admins have the option to have all user comments queue up for approval prior to being published — while this can be a valuable safeguard, particularly for businesses and organizations that attract very strong opinions (e.g. politics), this may not be the best option for all brands. Censorship can reflect very poorly on a brand’s authenticity!

3. Option to allow private messaging between users and the brand – Admins have the option to allow fans and other users to private message the page, much like a friend can send a private message to the inbox of another friend — a fantastic opportunity for customer service. Please note that brands cannot initiate contact, however a private conversation can occur if the user reaches out to the brand first.

These are just some highlights of the many changes being implemented by Facebook. We can provide customized consulting and design services for these new specs and functions, and can advise on what these changes mean to your existing efforts as well as future best practices.

While these changes are certainly a departure from the previous interface and functionalities, there are a lot of opportunities to be had here! Facebook’s key reasoning behind making these changes are to necessitate more organic fan interaction, and that is precisely what has always been needed for a successful Facebook presence. These changes simply facilitate that more aggressively.

If you have any questions or concerns around the new Facebook Timeline for Brands, we’re more than happy to sit down with you! Be sure to give us a shout and we will be in touch shortly. Remember, Timeline for Brands will be enforced as of March 30, so that’s not a ton of time to familiarize yourself with the new design!

Getting Social with Dodi Thorhaug!

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

If you are following @Oct17 on Twitter, you may have already heard: a few of our lucky clients will get to try UserTesting! (We introduced UserTesting to you a couple weeks back right here on our blog, in case you forgot) So as you can see, there are perks that come with being an October 17 client!

The professional services provided by the October 17 Media team prove, without a doubt, they are on top of their game. I would strongly recommend them to anyone expanding their business to include social networking.
- Dodi Thorhaug

One of our clients, Dodi Thorhaug, is a North Shore real estate agent and we began working with Dodi on her social media channels near the end of 2010. As much as we would love to show you the before and after shots, we can’t – because it was in fact her first time with social media! So we started right from scratch with Dodi, and now she is on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and tweeting, sharing, liking and all that social media jazz!

We like to take care of our clients and one of the things that we strongly believe in for businesses is maintaining a professional and consistent brand image across social media channels online. On Twitter and YouTube, this can be achieved with the profile image and custom backgrounds.

Profile photos are important on Facebook as well, but Facebook does not allow a custom background. “So how do I customize my Facebook Page,” you ask? Boy do we have an answer for you: building custom tabs! Custom Facebook tabs are just that – custom. They can highlight different things according to your business’ goals.

For Dodi, we created a Welcome tab (good for any business, shows people that you are who you say you are), a Listings tab for prospective buyers, and a Sold Listings tab for prospective sellers. And we must say ourselves, they look quite fancy indeed!

Now that we’ve got you drooling and thinking you could use some customizing to spice up your social media channels, give us a shout and we can help you out!

Twibbon: Social Media Bumper Sticker

Posted on by Flora the Intern

Twibbon Examples of Twibbons

Social media marketing is all about virality, and Twibbon is an easy and fun way to help promote awareness about an important cause, event, or a brand. Twibbon allows users to visibly show their support for a cause by overlaying a small icon, or “Twibbon”, on their profile pictures on Twitter and Facebook. If you’ve been hanging around on Twitter for a while, you’ve probably noticed a few already: the red ribbon for World Aids Day, the Vancouver Canucks logo, and the IE 6 Must Die icon are just a few examples of successful Twibbons.

While Twibbons usually take up a small corner of your avatar, a little embellishment goes a long way. Think about it: when you’re stuck in traffic in a sea of cars, you probably don’t pay much attention to the cars around you, unless 1. It’s a Lamborghini, or 2. It’s got a sweet bumper sticker! Whether it’s a fish symbol, a Transformers logo, or a funny quote, people take notice. Now imagine hundreds or thousands of people sporting your “bumper sticker” on their avatars and how that would look on a Twitter or Facebook news feed!

The viral nature of Twibbon can help you increase your following and likes. Want to try it out for free? It’s pretty easy:

  1. Choose a Cause. What are you passionate about? It could be anything from a charity, an upcoming conference, your favourite holiday… pretty much anything! But be sure to check if a Twibbon has already been made for your cause.
  2. Design your own Twibbon. You can choose from the series of stock images that Twibbon provides, or open up Photoshop (or another graphics editing program of your choice) and create your own. Just make sure that it’s 200 x 200 pixels and that the background is transparent so that the rest of the profile picture is visible behind the Twibbon. Save it as a PNG.
  3. Create your Twibbon. Go to http://twibbon.com/create, choose to connect with either Facebook or Twitter, and allow access to your account (don’t worry, we checked for you, it’s safe :) ). Fill in your email, as well as the name and description of your cause.
  4. Upload your Twibbon.
  5. Click “I just want a free campaign”. And tada! Your Twibbon is now created!
  6. Add your Twibbon to your profile picture. Position and preview your Twibbon and click “Show my support now!” The Twibbon will be added to your profile picture and Twibbon will post a tweet on your behalf to promote the cause.

Check out the quick one that we made for October 17 Media and add it to your profile picture if you <3 us: http://twibbon.com/join/October-17-Media

So go on, slap on your virtual bumper sticker… and be sure to share your causes with us!

All the Power to Ya, Ev!

Posted on by Priscilla the Intern

Is it just me, or is Evan Williams, former CEO of Twitter, even more respectable now that he has stepped down to focus on product strategy? I could be biased after meeting him in San Francisco at the Girls in Techfireside chat” event. But what can I say, the man walks the talk. His stepping-down goes hand in hand with what he said at this event: R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Strategy and New Happenings @ Twitter

At Kicklabs, the innovation incubator where the “fireside chat” took place, Evan gave us the down-low on what to expect for Twitter in the near future. He emphasized the importance of “cutting down on the layer of information overload”. Evan’s long term goal is giving Tweeters the best tweets they care about most, keyword: relevance. This means incorporating what has always been Twitter’s strength of being “on location” and “real time” at events (a prime example being how Twitter has been used during natural disasters these last few years).

They also hired their first marketing guy! Did you know that after all these years, they didn’t have anybody specifically on Marketing? He’s been working on keeping the branding consistent for Twitter…so don’t use the wrong logo or bird! …a warning from Evan ;) What’s more, they are starting a new university recruitment, called Class of Twitter. From their “Meet the Class of Twitter” and “New Twitter” videos, it’s clear which bird they want you to use.

“How do you keep a fast-growing company feeling like a small company?”

“People have to talk!” According to their blog, Twitter went from 20 to 300 employees in 2 years (not to mention a growth of 3 million to 165 million registered users too). Evan mentioned that the problem with big companies is “tribalism” and the lack of trust in each other. His solution? Something that we value and instill at our own company: October 17 Media‘s core value of Open Communication. Ask our intern and they’ll tell ya just how important it is! Evan combats the lack of trust by instilling an attitude of transparency and sharing at Twitter: along with new hire orientations and indoctrinating employees with company history, staff share notes, hopes and goals with each other regularly.

Successful Startups

The most resonant part of the whole evening was hearing Evan’s view that the “most successful companies come from within”. It’s good to analyze and do market research, but if the company is driven entirely out of that, no wonder it fails! Following trends means entering a category that has already been created…that’s what Evan did with Odeo, which he admits wasn’t driven out of passion and became “boring”. Don’t conform and be like everyone else!

I got advice along the same lines just the day before from Brian Wong, CEO of Kiip, an exciting new mobile advertising platform that is still in its stealth mode. It’s sure to be explosive, so “kiip” your eyes out @kiipme. He is an advisor at Kicklabs, where Evan Williams was interviewed after his talk here.

Blogging > PR

And where to hear the latest Twitter news? When they have any announcements, Twitter prefers to post on their blog. “Blog posts are a better way to promote and announce….less so with PR,” Evan said. And lo and behold, he likes to follow up the announcement with tweets. Sounds a little like something we do, huh? BTW, do you follow us on Twitter?

We are firm believers that blogging can help improve search engine optimization (it’s tried and true). Twitter, aka “microblogging” to some, is also a must-have social media tool to communicate and engage with your clients and customers. We can help you create, manage and get the most out of your account…give us friendly wizards a shout @oct17, on Facebook , or on our website. We’d love to share the latest social media and online marketing news, because duh, that’s what we do!

*Thumbs up* for spontaneous event crashing and for Ev! (Like button below :) )

Inbox to Inbox: Email Marketing

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

Email MarketingGone are the days when marketing meant salesmen knocking on your door. These days, with everyone having email accounts, sales people are knocking on your inbox instead. So, do you have an email newsletter working for your company?

When e-mail was launched almost 40 years ago (yes, 40 years ago, check out the history of email on Wikipedia), it was a new and innovative way of communication. Then came the desktop, the laptop and then broadband, and email became the best way to reach someone instantaneously. Today we can’t really imagine a life without it. We are addicted to it. We probably spend hundreds of our waking minutes in checking emails, sending hi’s and hello’s to friends and family who live across the globe.

Naturally, the marketing gurus figured that getting into your inbox would get more results than knocking on your door. Email marketing’s major benefit is that it is cost effective. How much does it cost to create a marketing email? Next to nothing compared with traditional print media. (We can give you a real quote if you’re interested.) Email newsletters can have a creative and truly stunning branded format. Neither will cost even a fraction of hiring sales representatives, printing flyers or promotional cards and distributing them.

As far online marketing goes, email marketing is definitely effective. However, if yours is not working then you may need to make a few adjustments. There are a few guidelines to follow in email marketing, starting with the content itself. It is after all an advertisement and should be made to sell.

Instead of being verbose, email marketing should lean towards short, sharp and simple. Make offers, keep them straight and lure buyers right from the first line. Keywords like FREE, DISCOUNT, VOUCHERS all trigger our curiosity and make us read the email. However, words like FREE can also trigger spam filters so be careful how you use them as they can be costly mistakes that earn you a spot in the trash folder. It is also important that email marketing maintain the same brand identity as offline marketing. Emails should carry the colors and logo of the company being marketed.

Email marketing should be targeted towards the right audience. There is no point in sending emails with offers on baby products to teenage boys, now is there? However, it is not easy to build mailing lists online. It is possible to start with affiliate programs with other websites and then retaining the visitors by offering a “subscribe” option.

Additional features and discounts on the site can also be withheld from non-subscribers thus encouraging subscription, which will add to your mailer list. Some companies also rent out their mailer list but we don’t promote this to our clients as it’s heading down the road of non-permission based email which we don’t approve of. These lists can be accessed through public libraries in the US, but again, be careful how you use them. You don’t want people to associate your business with spam!

Be interactive. Make your emails more interactive, encourage customers to provide feedback and send personalized messages to returning customers. To do this you will need to track the activity of recipients in your subscriber list. Referral offers for long time clients can also generate more clients that are loyal.

There are of course many other tips and tricks of email marketing that you can learn from the industry leaders. Sometimes, a little bit of professional help can go a long way in producing results. If you’d like to know more, please do give us a call.
