So, October 17th is just around the corner…

Posted on by Flora the Intern

… and you know what that means around here: PARTY! :)  (Don’t get it? Find out the story behind our name!)

October 17 Media is turning 3, and you’re invited to our bash! We’re having it at Ceili’s Irish Pub again this year – we had a blast there last year – and it’s happening on Thursday, October 14th from 6-8pm. No, that’s not a typo; yes, we know it’s not actually on October 17th… let it go already!

Anyway, there will be FREE appies and cake (yum!) and just good times in general!

Want to join in on the fun? Well, you’re most certainly welcome to! Just RSVP via email by October 8th, and we’ll save you some cake.

While you’re at it, visit the Facebook event page and help us show off a bit ;)

We hope to see you soon!

Advertising Ideas for October!

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

Logo in a pumpkinWe’re right in the thick of October, and since we just recently celebrated our birthday, we thought we’d give you a list of advertising ideas for this month!

Time for Fall
Fall is one of the best times of the year (unless you rake leaves for a living…or maybe it IS the best time of the year for you). Weather-wise, it’s not too cold and not too hot, and we can all dress in fashionable coats and boots. Even Mother Nature is changing her dress – turning the green leaves of summer into beautiful hues of orange and rust. This is the perfect time to do a make-over of your own. It might be worthwhile to dress your ads in fall colors (keeping your branding in mind) to help your customers associate your company with the changing season and attract new customers looking for something different.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Aside from the warm orange colors of autumn, pink is en vogue, as October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women all over the world. Your company can help in the fight against this deadly disease in many ways. There are various “Race for the Cure” events all over the country – you can sponsor runners or have employees participate. (We did it last year, check out our blog post! We raised over $1500.00!) Let your customers know that you are participating, and help them become aware of this disease. Check out Pink for October, a campaign started in August 2006 where webmasters all over the world change their templates to pink in October. You can add a link so your clients can learn more about breast cancer and how to contribute to cancer research. Vancouver’s CIBC Run for the Cure event has already wrapped up for 2009 but think about it for next year! You can check out the Run for the Cure web site here.

Halloween
Each year we’ve been feeling the Christmas creep earlier and earlier. Have you started seeing holiday decorations at the stores or have radio stations been competing to see who will play the first Christmas songs for the season? It seems we’re all forgetting one of the best holidays – the one between Thanksgiving and Christmas – Halloween! Okay, so it’s not technically a holiday, but who doesn’t wish we could all take off work for this day? Everyone is gearing up for the scariest night of the year, so why not your company? If you sell a particular product, have some Halloween themed ones just for October. On All Hallow’s Eve, why not do a reverse trick or treat? Have someone from your organization wear a costume that best represents your company and go around the neighborhood to hand out candy – with your contact info and/or business card, of course.

Or you could carve your logo into a pumpkin and show everyone on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and your blog. Wait… hmmm, we should do this. Stay tuned…

Sports Season!
Don’t forget about the other half of the population (or sports-loving women!). The hockey and football season is in full swing, so think of all the eyeballs you’ll be attracting with sports-related promotions and advertising. Design your next ad with your home team’s colours in mind, or the sports celebrity from your town. You can also create promotions to raise team spirit, such as offering discounts if your team wins or giving away swag at games. (I love this idea for restaurants and bars).

It’s not too late yet – get a move on and you can still implement your October-themed advertising ideas!

The 2nd annual October 17 Media Birthday Pary!

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

First, we want to take a minute to thank EVERYONE who came out to our 2nd annual October 17 Media birthday party at Ceili’s Irish Pub on Thursday night!

We had over 50 people stop by to give us their best wishes and we really had a great time! You can check out the birthday invitation blog post here. Are you wondering who the heck is October 17 Media and where the name came from?

We’d also really like to humbly thank Ceili’s Pub for hosting us and providing some great refreshments. The staff was wonderful… you guys rock!

Here are a few photographs (on Flickr) of our crew setting up (meet the October 17 media team on our profile page), making cupcakes (the oh-so-delicious Oct 17 cup cake army!) and our attendees socializing at the festivities. Please consider this an open invite for next year’s anniversary/birthday party #3!

Here’s Brenda Cadman icing 60 of the October 17 Media Cupcakes! She created a cupcake army for our company’s birthday party:

PS. Just an FYI but the October 17 Media birthday party was promoted entirely ONLINE! Yep… just a cool fact I thought we’d share.

Birthday Marketing Cupcake

It’s no secret that our company is named after its birthday. We *LOVE* birthdays at October17media.

Everyone who works here gets the day off on their special day. Heck, even October 17’s two owners can often be found doing some quality shopping to celebrate. Why do women shop to celebrate? Yes, we know it bewilders men everywhere and makes perfect sense to women. Shopping gives you immediate gratification. The sort of gratification one wants on their birthday. Pretty much everyone looks forward to their birthday. Yes, I know some people claim otherwise as the years start to mount, but truthfully it’s a time to commemorate the years past.

So what does all this birthday talk have to do with Marketing? So glad you asked. Birthdays open the door to Marketers everywhere and allow them to reach out to their new, current and potential clients. They can send the typical ‘Happy Birthday Message’ to keep in touch but what about the opportunity of a once-a-year promotion? A special offer that you can only take advantage of on your birthday, or birthday week or birthday month.
