Calling All Oenophiles! Grape Juice Event is Fast Approaching

Posted on by Katie Turvill

It`s that time of year!! October 17 Media is proud to once again be a sponsor of Grape Juice! Grape Juice is a wine auction event that was founded by McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group and CameronMcNeill.com in order to raise money for Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland.

Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland work to match volunteer mentors with young girls who are facing challenges and are in need of someone to look up to and spend time with. The paths these young girls start on are critical to the future successes in their adult lives which is why it is so important that these girls are matched with an appropriate mentor who will help them get started in the right direction. Matches cost roughly $2,000 to maintain for one year and as a primarily privately funded not-for-profit organisation, it takes a lot of work and community contribution to mentor a child.

So please join us on May 5th at Society in Yaletown for the 4th annual Grape Juice Wine Auction. Come bid on unique and exclusive wines from around the world while enjoying hors d’oeuvres for a worthy cause.

Event Details:
May 5th, 2011
Location: Society
1257 Hamilton Street
$100 ticket includes hors d’oeuvres & wine tasting
(a tax receipt is available for a portion of the ticket price)

Visit Grape Juice to purchase tickets or make a donation.

WordPress 3.1 Launched!

Posted on by Katie Turvill

WordPress has now launched the new 3.1 edition, called “Reinhardt” in honour of the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. This edition includes several new and updated features for users, developers and readers to take advantage of (I just had fun playing around with it to write this post). Below is a list of some of the new features you will see.

  • Internal Linking – allows you to search for an old post of your own or browse a list of existing content and select it for inclusion in a new post.
  • Admin Bar – appears at the top of your screen and contains various links to useful admin screens when a user is logged in and visiting the site. Admin bar can be hidden by going into your personal settings and unchecking “Show Admin Bar”
  • Streamlined Writing Interface – new users of WordPress will find the write screen much less cluttered than before, because options that were rarely used or required are hidden by default.
  • Post Formats – This is a new way of styling or changing the presentation of posts. Now you can have videos, links, images, audios, quotes, statuses, etc. all in one place, and the best part is that they will be styled accordingly
  • Network Admin – move Super Admin menus and related pages out of the regular admin and into a new Network Admin screen.
  • List-type Admin Screens – this allows for sortable columns for list-type screens and better pagination.
  • Exporter/Importer Overhaul – new behind the scenes stuff like adding author information, better handling for taxonomies and terms, and proper support for navigation menus.
  • Custom Content Type Improvements – allows developers to generate archive pages, and have better menu and capability controls.
  • Advanced Queries - allows developers to query multiple taxonomies and custom fields.
  • Refreshed Blue Admin Color Scheme – puts the focus more squarely on your content.
  • Security Improvements - there are a few new improvements but most notably a streamlined and improved password recovery system and additional administrator types for installations with multiple blogs.

Tip: It is important to keep to keep your WordPress updated with new software because they are always improving on security functionality and vulnerabilities. If you need help creating or upgrading your WordPress site give us a call and we will be more than happy to help you out.

Facebook Brings New Life into Fan Pages with iFrames

Posted on by Katie Turvill

Along with the recent changes to Facebook Pages come some new and exciting opportunities! We are happy to say that Facebook pages now support iframes. This will give developers a lot more freedom while creating custom tabs for Pages by allowing the use of more popular, simple and standards-based web programming models such as HTML, JavaScript and CSS. All Pages that have been upgraded are no longer able to use FBML and will have to start using iframes, however, for now all current FBML tabs will still function.

With all of these new tools at your disposal, we are excited to see some of the new unique Pages that will start popping up! Below are a few new benefits to using iframes when creating your Facebook Page.

Benefits to using iframes when creating your Facebook Page.

  1. Fully functional JavaScript based maps, such as Google Maps can be placed withing your Facebook Page. This is a great and easy way to show your business location to users.
  2. Ability to embed YouTube Videos and other multimedia. This gives more functionality, access to related videos and also includes the ability to view a video in full screen.
  3. Ability to embed external documents in your fan page. This includes things such as slides, PDFs and other documents using Slideshare or related applications.
  4. Get more interactive with your landing pages using any JavaScript library of your choice: jQuery, ExtJS, mootools, etc. You can also use flash or HTML5 on your landing page to make it more interesting!
  5. Include a “Like” button within the page. No longer do you need an arrow pointing to the “Like” button; instead, it can be placed directly on your page for the user to find and click. Pssst… this one is our fave!
  6. Create your own navigation and drop down menu. Now that the tabs have been moved to the left hand side on upgraded Pages, there is added space at the top. With iframes, you are able to build your own navigation menu along the top and even include a dropdown menu within it.
  7. The downside of this new iframes approach is that you need to be familiar with those technologies to make custom tabs function properly and you will need a Web-accessible server where you upload the files for your application page. But that’s what we are here for! Want to put a skateboarding dog video(who wouldn’t?) or Google Map on your page? Give us a call to have a customized Facebook tab made.

Facebook Page Improvements Businesses Will Love

Posted on by Katie Turvill

So it looks like Facebook has been listening to its users after all!!

Major Page improvements were launched today on Facebook that can be applied right now! These improvements were designed to give Pages better communication, more opportunities for expression and improve relevancy. So basically, you have more freedom with your actions on Facebook and more interaction with your fans.

These new features are going to improve Page functionality, now allowing you to navigate and interact with other areas of Facebook as your Page. This is great news as you can now like and comment on other Pages, as your Page, and even opt to get your own News Feed showing news from other Pages you like and receive notifications about fan activity. There is also a new profile design which will allow Pages to feature recent photos at the top of the page as well as highlight other Pages you are connected with and who is managing your Page. Lastly, Pages have been made more engaging for users as well. A user can now filter the wall to see the most interesting posts first and they can also discover the friends and interests they have in common with your Page.

There is also an option to have the Page Owners and Admins shown on the left hand side of the Page. This is great if you want your fans to know who is behind the beauty that is your Page, however, if you are looking to keep your Admins private, which many people will be, you have the option to keep them hidden. This is done while editing your Page.

How to keep admins private:
Simply go into the Featured tab –> Manage Owners –> Uncheck the boxes beside each Admin’s name to keep them hidden.

Log onto your Page today to upgrade with the simple click of a button. The option to upgrade will appear at the top of your page along with a preview feature. We recommend selecting preview first and taking the step-by-step tour of the new features and how to add them your page. Once you are confident that you want to upgrade your Page then go for it.

These improvements seem to make Pages a lot more like Facebook Profiles in the look and functionality so it will serve as a better tool for Pages to interact with its fans and show its interests. This is great news for the October 17 Media team as we have been waiting for these features for a while now. And we know our clients are going to love it too.
