So, October 17th is just around the corner…

Posted on by Flora the Intern

… and you know what that means around here: PARTY! :)  (Don’t get it? Find out the story behind our name!)

October 17 Media is turning 3, and you’re invited to our bash! We’re having it at Ceili’s Irish Pub again this year – we had a blast there last year – and it’s happening on Thursday, October 14th from 6-8pm. No, that’s not a typo; yes, we know it’s not actually on October 17th… let it go already!

Anyway, there will be FREE appies and cake (yum!) and just good times in general!

Want to join in on the fun? Well, you’re most certainly welcome to! Just RSVP via email by October 8th, and we’ll save you some cake.

While you’re at it, visit the Facebook event page and help us show off a bit ;)

We hope to see you soon!

A movie about Facebook? Do we hear “field trip”?!

Posted on by Flora the Intern

If you’re social media fanatics like us, then you’re probably psyched for The Social Network movie coming out next Friday, October 1st. It’s about a group of friends from Harvard who decided to start a social networking website called Facebook (you might have heard of it). Check out the trailer:

Clearly, this is totally related to what we do here at October 17 Media, so the team is going to take a little field trip to the theatres next Monday, October 4th to watch it (stay tuned for a mini review)!

Come watch it with us!
Tell us what you think of the trailer by commenting on this blog post, and we’ll enter you into a random draw for a free movie ticket to the show! If you can join us next Monday, that’d be even better… popcorn on us ;) .

Children's Wish Foundation
October 17 Media loves giving back to the community – and this time, we’re helping make wishes come true! We’re proud to be the social media sponsor for “Exile Island”, an exciting fundraising event for The Children’s Wish Foundation happening this Wednesday, September 22 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Here’s what’s going down: ten high-profile members of the community (including Canucks alumni Dave Babych and Better Business Bureau of Mainland BC President Lynda Pasacreta) will be banished to Exile Island where they will compete in a series of mental and physical challenges to win the title of “BC’s Ultimate Survivor”. Upwards of $100,000 is expected to be raised at the event, and ten Wish Children will be granted their most heartfelt wish! (more…)

Why Social Bookmarking is Delicious

Social Bookmark IconsWhat do you do when you come across a site or page on the Internet that you want to read again or share with friends? You probably bookmark it online with one of the social bookmarking sites like Digg or Delicious. You have probably seen the icons for these bookmarking sites on almost every page you come across on the internet (free social bookmarking icon sets below). In case you haven’t been using them, you’re missing out.

Social bookmarking isn’t the same as sharing a link on Facebook or Twitter. It is more like adding the page to a virtual Favorites folder. The immediate advantage of social bookmarking is that you can access it from any system, even mobile devices. Therefore, the sites and pages that you need to go to at anytime will be at your fingertips. (more…)

Introducing the Fabulous Flora Leung!

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

Flora LeungOctober 17 Media welcomes our newest team member, Flora Leung! Flora is a marketing and communication co-op student from Simon Fraser University, and she’ll be working with us for the next four months as our Marketing and Administrative Assistant. Check out our interview with her below to learn a bit more about this go-getter. Welcome to the team, Flora!

What’s your degree in?
I’m working toward a joint major in Business and Communication at SFU with a concentration in marketing and media and culture. It gives an interesting mix of perspectives on advertising, public relations, and popular culture, and I love it!

Favourite marketing campaign?
It’s hard to choose a favourite with the amount of inspiring, creative work out there! But I’m a huge fan of guerilla and viral marketing, and I thought the recent campaign on Chatroulette for the horror movie “The Last Exorcism” was very clever. I was too chicken to watch it at first, but I’m glad I forced myself to sit through it. It’s actually not that bad, but I’d better warn you that it’s not for the faint-hearted! (more…)
