Thinking of running a contest on Facebook to get some new fans?

Well, don’t just jump in without learning about Facebook’s rules and regulations around running a contest. Yes, you read that right, you can’t just run a contest on Facebook without okay’ing it with them FIRST! You risk having your contest or even your page taken down without warning if you don’t follow their guidelines.

Here’s a few highlights of what you CAN’T do:

  • The prize cannot contain alcohol.
  • You can’t run a contest that’s open to individuals in Belgium, Norway, Sweden, or India.
  • You can’t mention ‘Facebook’ in the rules except in a few specific ways.
  • You cannot notify winners through Facebook, such as through Facebook messages, chat, or posts on profiles or Pages.

Marketing to Women?

Posted on by Priscilla the Intern

Chart for When Women Are Online Who wouldn’t want to market to women when this segment has the decision making authority and purchasing power to RULE THE WORLD! ;) It’s especially important on Facebook to have your updates show up on the top of fans’ News Feeds rather than getting buried under the bounteous (and more recent) other updates being made. Timing is of the essence. So when are women online to actually receive those brilliant marketing messages you’ve created?

A recent report by Google in June 2010 shows that women mostly do their research in the mornings, while women who don’t have children go online in the evenings. I wonder why. :)

The data was from a study conducted by OTX in March 2010, where they asked 4,896 women “What time of the day do you typically go online to gather information?” (more…)

How to setup SMS (Texting) to “like” a Facebook fan page!

Posted on by Tamara Brooks

What? You can do that???
That’s the usual response we get when we tell clients and friends that they can advertise their Facebook pages by inviting people to text to join a Facebook fan page.

And, the best news? It’s free. Normal text messaging rates from the user’s phone company still apply but for you, it’s no cost. Also, the person signing up needs to have Facebook Mobile activated on their Facebook account or be willing to activate it to do this.

So, how do you setup the SMS to “Like” your fan page?
First, you need to have a few things to get started:

  1. In order to have this functionality, your Facebook page must have at least 25 fans. This was recently changed from the 100 fan requirement.
  2. You also need your own custom URL on Facebook. Again, you will need to have 25 or more fans to obtain this, but it’s easy to set up once you reach this level. Simply go to: http://www.facebook.com/username/ and follow the directions to create your fan page custom URL.

Once finished you can promote your fan page by printing or announcing the following:

“Like” our company by SMS’ing!
Send a text to: fan YourPageName to 32665 (FBOOK) to join our Facebook page today.
(Be sure to replace “YourPageName” with your own Facebook page name.)

Want to see what we mean? Try it out! Send the following text message to 32665 to join the October 17 Media page through SMS:
